Colin was born in Northamptonshire
and followed his father into music. At the age of 15 he was principal
trombonist in Northamptonshire Youth Concert Band and Rushden Mission Band.
In 1986, Colin was the prizewinner at the Royal Military School of Music in
aural perception, instrumentation and best jazz group (keyboardist). He left
the army in 1989 to study music at Sheffield University majoring in trombone with
Philip Harrison and composition with Paul Archbold.
Since 1993, Colin has worked as a music teacher. As a teacher, he has directed or conducted a wide range of school and college groups from bands, orchestras and choirs to musical theatre, jazz, world music and pop. In 1996, Colin was a finalist in the Harlequin Brass Composers & Arrangers Competition. Several of the brass band works featured on this website were composed or arranged for Towcester Studio Band . Colin played solo trombone for Towcester for 8 years.
Colin's most recent interests include developing jazz and big band at Sponne School, Towcester where he now teaches. He is married to Elaine who plays the trumpet. They both currently play The 2- tones (UK) Ska Covers Band. Colin also plays trombone in Harmony in Harlem, Michael Kilpatrick's orchestra devoted entirely to the works of Duke Ellington. Harmony in Harlem played at the Ellington 2008 Conference in London and were privileged to play with Art Barron and Buster Cooper (both former Ellington trombonists). Colin prides himself on his versatility as a musician (on brass or piano) in all kinds of genres including a church group and various orchestras, bands, musicals or choral societies.
